Foo Fighters consists of Grohl (vocals and guitar), Taylor Hawkins (drums), Nate Mendel (bass), Chris Shiflett (guitar), and Pat Smear (guitar).

The band's self-titled debut album (1995) peaked at number twenty three on the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum in the United States. The album's first single, "This Is a Call" was a top ten hit in both the UK and Australia. Their follow-up album The Colour and the Shape (1997) charted higher, reaching number ten on the Billboard 200, and went platinum in the US, Australia and Canada. The "Everlong" single from the album was certified gold in the US. Their third album There Is Nothing Left to Lose (1999) was again certified platinum in the US, Australia and Canada. The album's first single "Learn to Fly" was the band's first single to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. Foo Fighters' fourth album One by One (2002) was their first to top the charts in the United Kingdom and Australia. In 2003, the band released their first video album, Everywhere but Home, featuring live concert footage from the One by One tour.

The band's fifth album, In Your Honor was released in 2005. The album's first single "Best of You" achieved the band's highest certifications for a single, earning platinum status in the US and Canada, and was a top five hit in both the UK and Australia.[1] The band's sixth album Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace (2007) topped the charts in the UK, Australia, Canada and Belgium. The album's first single" The Pretender" went platinum in Canada and gold in the US, and was a top ten hit in Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal and the UK.[2]

Their latest album, Wasting Light was released in April 2011 and debuted at number one in twelve countries.[3] The album's first single "Rope" holds the record for the most consecutive weeks at number one on the US Rock Songs chart. Foo Fighters have sold 9.5 million albums in the US.[4]
